The cathode bias or self-bias technique connects the grid to ground and elevate the cathode voltage above ground. In this way the grid voltage is negative with respect to the cathode voltage. These are discussed in the following: 3.6.1 Fixed bias; 3.6.2 Cathode bias or self-bias; 3.6.3 Gain of the voltage amplifier with self-bias english/german operation manual. The BiasMaster (TM) allows to monitor the bias current savely and easily. While adjusting the Bias control pot of your amp the BiasMaster (TM) does show the actual result. This lets you set and evaluate all reasonable biasing range your amp and tubes offers to find and set your personal perfect choice. "In electronics, bias usually refers to a fixed DC (direct current) voltage or current applied to a terminal of an electric component such as a diode, transistor, or vacuum tube in a circuit in which AC (alternating current) signals are also present in order to establish proper operating conditions for the component." Wow! BIAS AMP 2 is now available: positivegrid.com/bias-ampThe new BIAS AMP 2 virtual amp designer has a bold new look and adds a mountain of new feat IMO, bias drift accounts for varying sonics in SS amplifiers. Bias drifts with temperature. Service manuals often have voltage spec, but no °C or how and where measured. Bias an amp that's been idling for 20 minutes and then measure it after Zepping for an hour and the values will be radically different. This is a very basic guide for checking the bias of a tube amp. There are always exceptions and with many different amp types, these instructions may vary. Whenever in doubt, ask a professional for help and avoid any risks - especially if your amp doesn't give you such easy access to bias points and trims. Also, many "self biasing" amps (notably EL84 amps) run the power tubes at the point of imminent destruction (150% to 200% of maximum idle power dissipation). Why amp designers do this is somewhat of a mystery. It's always best to have the bias checked. Because it sounds good and lack of understanding in some cases.
